This year has gone by really fast and i have enjoyed the majority of the rotations i have been on. It started off a little bumpy due to the facility i was working at, but after the first month or so i settled in and enjoyed my work thoroughly. I was lucky to have had the chance to work at both community care units as well as an adult inpatient unit. I learned that recovery is possible and i saw it happen at the CCU's that i was working at for the first 6 months of the year. I also learned a lot about psychosocial rehabilitation and had a chance to observe and collaborate closely with members of the multi-disciplinary team. This included OT's psychologists and social workers. This allowed me to learn about all aspects of care for mental health consumers. Another aspect that i really enjoyed at the CCU's was presenting and participating in the clinical reviews, as well as this i learned a great deal about case management.
My 6 month rotation was at an adult acute inpatient unit and it was a rotation that i was really looking forward too. Within the first few weeks of the rotation i realised that this is where i would like to work and have been lucky enough to obtain a permanent job there. Throughout the rotation my nursing skills constantly improved. I built and maintained effective therapeutic relationships. My clinical judgement improved greatly through firsthand experience and observation of certain nurses and how they handled situations. This allowed be to witness what worked and what did not, therefore allowing me to develop my own effective methods. My de-escalation skills also improved, and i learned how to deal with the stress that comes from patient aggression and violence. One area i found challenging is providing care for patients who had just used narcotic substances, in particular ICE. Over the year my skills in interacting and communicating with them has improved, but i feel more experience in this area would be great as each patient can present quite differently. I always knew that psychiatric nursing was the field i wanted to work in and completing this grad year has confirmed that for me. It’s been a great year and i look forward to the rest of my career.
