Aripiprazole
a) is the medication a typical/atypical antipsychotic? Is the medication an SSRI/SNRI antidepressant?
Atypical antipsychotic.
b) common brand names
Abilify; Aripiprex
c) normal dose range
For agitation r/t schizphrenia/bipolar: 9.75mg/1.3mL IMI; max IMI dose 30mg/day
For schizophrenia: begin 10-15mg/day; max dose 30mg/day
For Bipolar I disorder: begin 15mg/day, max dose 30mg/day
d) common side effects
Akathisia (inner restlessness and need to be moving), general restlessness, insomnia, constipation, fatigue, blurred vision, sedation, tremor, extrapyrimidal side effects, nausea, headache
e) contraindications
Allergy to ariprprazole; CVA, NMS, tardive dyskinesia, hyperglycaemia, Type 2 DM, orthostatic hypotension, seizures/convulsions, leukopenia, neutropenia, agranulocytosis, potential for cognitive and motor impairment
f) special monitoring/nursing care requirements
Assess for allergies to ariprprazole; observe for presence of side effects/adverse reactions including changes in vital signs/consciousness; observe for sedation and monitor use of machinery appropriately; assess possible interactions with other medications, including prescription/non-prescription medications and illicit substances; monitor BGL as this medication may increase BGL potentially leading to diabetes/ketoacidosis
g) education requirements for patients/families/carers
Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Consider how drowsy it makes you and the appropriateness of operating machinery. Ensure you rise slowly when changing from lying to sitting/standing as you may experience dizziness. Be sure to drink plenty of water every day while you are taking this medication. If you miss a dose of your medication, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
