A) Diazepam is not a typical or atypical or a SSRI/SSNI drug beacuse it's an BENZO
B)Valium,Distat,Distat Acudial, Diazepam intensol
C)2mg,5mg and 10mg. 5mg is most common.
D)Drowsiness,Over sedation, light headeness, memory loss, hypersalivation, ataxia, Slurred speech, Dependance, Effect on vision, Eg: Blurred vision, Imapaired tracking
E)Hypersensitivity - Cross-sensitivity with other benzodiazepines may occurs - Comatose patients - Pre-existing CNS depression - Uncontrolled severe painUse cautiously in: 1) Hepatic dysfunction 2) Severe renal impairment 3) History of suicide attempt or drug dependence
F)Monitor BP, PR,RR prior to periodically throughout therapy and frequently during IV therapy. - Assess IV site frequently during administration, diazepam may cause phlebitis and venous thrombosis. - Prolonged high-dose therapy may lead to psychological or physical dependence. Restrict amount of drug available to patient. Observe depressed patients closely for suicidal tendencies. - Observe and record intensity, duration and location of seizure activity. The initial dose of diazepam offers seizure control for 15-20 min after administration. - IM injections are painful and erratically absorbed. If IM route is used, inject deeply into deltoid muscle for maximum absorption. - Caution patient to avoid taking alcohol or other CNS depressants concurrently with this medication. - Effectiveness of therapy can be demonstrated by decrease anxiety level; control of seizures; decreased tremulousness.
G)Before taking any diazepam, tell your doctor if: • you have an allergy to diazepam • you suffer from glaucoma, lung or breathing problems, muscle weakness, liver or kidney problems, depression and porphyrias • you take any other medication • you are pregnant (or planning pregnancy) or breastfeeding Your doctor will decide how much diazepam is right for you to take. Diazepam tablets should be swallowed whole, with a small glass of water. If you are taking the liquid, you will be supplied with the right measure. If you are using the rectal tubes, the content of the tube should be completely emptied into the rectum. If you have been prescribed an injection, your nurse will give you the correct dose. Never take more than the prescribed dose. If you accidentally take more than the prescribed dose or an overdose of diazepam, contact your doctor or your local hospital. Ask your pharmacist or nurse if you are not sure of anything.
